EVs dominate the most American-made cars index and it’s not just because of Tesla

Tesla, Kia, and Volkswagen took six of the top 10 spots in the 2025 American-Made Index, which ranks vehicles built and bought in the U.S.

The U.S. automaker, which assembles its four light-duty passenger vehicles in Texas and California, has landed in the top 10 ever since it started participating in the annual ranking five years ago. Kirsten Korosec is a reporter and editor who has covered the future of transportation from EVs and autonomous vehicles to urban air mobility and in-car tech for more than a decade. She is also co-founder and co-host of the podcast, “The Autonocast.” She previously wrote for Fortune, The Verge, Bloomberg, MIT Technology Review and CBS Interactive.
