Junk playgrounds once let children set fires, saw wood, build towers, and write operettas. What happened to them?
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, western playgrounds were a contradictory mix of military academies to develop physical and bodily skills, and progressive spaces for collective effort and child-centred learning.
