EXT4 Extsize Hints Being Worked On As Step Toward Non-Torn/Atomic Writes

Ojaswin Mujoo with IBM has posted an initial set of 'request for comments' patches implementing extsize hints for EXT4, similar to the hints being worked on for the XFS file-system

The patch that adds the actual extsize hints support for the EXT4 file-system goes on to elegantly sum it up as:"** MOTIVATION ** 1. This feature allows us to ask the allocator for blocks that are logically AS WELL AS physically aligned to an extent size hint (aka extsize), that is generally a power of 2. As it's just in an RFC phase of development right now, it still may be some time before the design is solidified and the patches are ready for upstreaming into the Linux kernel.
