FBI uses facial recognition technology, online photos to identify and arrest ICE Portland protester


The criminal complaint lists a pink gas mask and a forearm tattoo as distinct clues that led investigators to use third-party software to help make an arrest.

The FBI then used "commercially available facial recognition software" to search for the suspect, matched him to photos posted on a Reed College photo-sharing page, tracked him to his home in Northeast Portland, and arrested him on Friday, July 25. She pointed out flaws in facial recognition technology, citing research that's shown it to have racial bias in being worse at identifying Black people and other minorities.
