FCC says low-income internet subsidies are endangered as funding runs low

A new bill could save the program, which may lose funding.

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) says that it will be forced to sunset its internet subsidy for low-income families, known as the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP), in May if it doesn’t receive additional funding. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel wrote in a letter to Congress that “millions of households” would lose the $30-a-month subsidy if funding isn’t approved before April. The National Telecommunications and Information Administration published survey results that found that in 2022, 18 percent of US households said they didn’t have internet at home because it was simply too expensive.
