First-ever 3D printer that gulps plastic, metal, chips to make layered devices

This innovative 3D printing technique will allow to create intricate devices with various materials using a single machine.

The University of Missouri researchers created this 3D printer that employs lasers to combine various materials in order to produce complex and functional structures. “This is the first time this type of process has been used, and it’s unlocking new possibilities,” said Bujingda Zheng, a doctoral student in mechanical engineering at the University of Missouri and the lead author of the study. Newsinnovation University of Missouri researchers have built a machine that combines elements of traditional 3D printing with laser technology to develop multi-material, multi-functional products.
