Frank McCourt: I want to buy TikTok — and scrap its algorithm
Who is trying to buy TikTok? Businessman with estimated net worth of $2.4 billion
The billionaire — a Boston-born real estate magnate who once owned the Los Angeles Dodgers baseball team — has an anxious gaze fixed on the US Supreme Court, which will rule as soon as Wednesday on whether to uphold a law forcing the Chinese owners of TikTok to sell it or face a ban from next week. McCourt, who has an estimated net worth of $2.4 billion, has made a formal bid for the US app via Project Liberty, a $500 million initiative he launched four years ago with the aim of building a better internet for consumers. McCourt says he has seen evidence shared with Congress that TikTok is using content curation to influence people to “think in a certain way” about other areas where China has an interest, from the Tiananmen Square massacre to the political repression of the Uighur minority, and from the suppression of democracy in Hong Kong to theories about the true source of Covid.
