FTC Finalizes Rule That Makes It Easy to Cancel Unwanted Subscriptions | Subscription providers will be required to inform customers what they're signing up for, obtain customer consent, and provide clear mechanisms to cancel.
Subscription providers will be required to inform customers what they're signing up for, obtain customer consent, and provide clear mechanisms to cancel.
Companies will soon have to make it as easy to cancel a subscription as they made it to sign up for one under a new Federal Trade Commission rule aimed at ending predatory business practices that lock consumers into paying for services they don’t want. “Too often, businesses make people jump through endless hoops just to cancel a subscription,” FTC Chair Lina Khan said in a statement. Several provisions were removed from the agency’s earlier drafts of the rule, including a requirement that sellers remind customers of their ability to opt out of a subscription annually and a requirement that sellers obtain customers’ consent before offering them additional deals in order to entice them to stay in a subscription.
