Fusion energy advances as Neutron's impact on tokamak uncovered


A breakthrough study sheds light on the impact of neutron radiation on thyristors, advancing the quest for safe and efficient fusion energy.

The team developed a mathematical model to correlate various key thyristor parameters with the observed degradation under neutron exposure, such as carrier lifetime, mobility, and blocking voltages. “A series of targeted thyristor physical simulations and neutron irradiation experiments are conducted to verify the accuracy of the theoretical analysis,” emphasized the researchers. Research revealed that the increasing leakage current in damaged thyristors might result in the failure of this critical safety mechanism, which could jeopardize the superconducting Tokamak.
