Global power demand to surge but clean generation will keep up: IEA

IEA says low-emission sources will account for almost half of global electricity production by 2026

The IEA report stated that about 85% of the increase in the world’s electricity demand through 2026 is expected to come from outside advanced economies – most notably China, India and countries in Southeast Asia. Electricity was described as accounting for 20% of final global energy consumption in 2023, up from 18% in 2015, though the IEA warned that "meeting the world’s climate goals would require electrification to advance significantly faster in the coming years". China is still expected to account for the largest part of the global increase in electricity demand in terms of volume, even as its economic growth slows and becomes less reliant on heavy industry in the outlook period, the IEA stated.
