Google is co-funding a guaranteed basic income trial that gives families $12,000 a year to help keep them housed
Google's philanthropic arm is co-funding a $2.8 million guaranteed income pilot aimed at reducing homelessness in and around San Francisco.
Google's funding partner is J-PAL North America, a regional office of the Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab, a global research center based at MIT. Basic income projects have surged in popularity in recent years, in part because data shows they're an effective tool in combating poverty, and participants overwhelmingly spend the money on essentials such as food, housing, and transportation. While it has cut back on perks in recent years, there's a stark contrast between the immense wealth of California's biggest tech companies and their well-remunerated employees, and the many locals struggling to afford basic living expenses.
