Google Lays Off Hundreds in Platforms and Devices Unit
Google's platforms and devices team had over 20,000 employees in January. Now, Google has laid off hundreds of employees in the unit after offering a voluntary exit program.
In January, Google offered all employees on its platforms and devices team a buyout or a severance package in exchange for a voluntary resignation. "Since combining the Platforms and Devices teams last year, we've focused on becoming more nimble and operating more effectively and this included making some job reductions in addition to the voluntary exit program that we offered in January," a Google spokesperson said in a statement to the outlet. Google formed the platforms and devices team in April 2024 by combining the division responsible for Android software and the Chrome browser with the unit in charge of gadgets like Pixel smartphones and Chromebooks.
