Google researchers unveil ‘VLOGGER’, an AI that can bring still photos to life

Google researchers have developed 'VLOGGER', an AI system that generates realistic talking head videos from a single image, using advanced diffusion models, enabling new applications while raising concerns about deepfakes.

The technology, called VLOGGER, relies on advanced machine learning models to synthesize startlingly realistic footage, opening up a range of potential applications while also raising concerns around deepfakes and misinformation. Request an invite A key enabler was the curation of a huge new dataset called MENTOR containing over 800,000 diverse identities and 2,200 hours of video — an order of magnitude larger than what was previously available. “We evaluate VLOGGER on three different benchmarks and show that the proposed model surpasses other state-of-the-art methods in image quality, identity preservation and temporal consistency,” the authors reported.
