Google seeks authenticity in the age of AI with new content labeling system


C2PA system aims to give context to search results, but trust problems run deeper than AI tech.

The C2PA standard creates a digital trail for content, backed by an online signing authority, that includes metadata information about where images originate and how they've been modified. In a blog post, Laurie Richardson, Google’s vice president of trust and safety, acknowledged the complexities of establishing content provenance across platforms. Beyond that, maintaining the metadata requires a complete toolchain that supports C2PA every step along the way, including at the source and any software used to edit or retouch the images.
