Google unveils Gemini CLI, an open source AI tool for terminals

Google launched a new, open source AI coding tool for terminals, Gemini CLI, to compete with similar offerings from OpenAI and Anthropic.

The company announced on Wednesday the launch of Gemini CLI, an agentic AI tool designed to run locally from your terminal. The popularity of Gemini 2.5 Pro has driven usage of third-party AI coding tools, such as Cursor and GitHub Copilot, which have become massive businesses. Previously with Gizmodo, Bloomberg, and MSNBC, Zeff has covered the rise of AI and the Silicon Valley Bank crisis.
