GPS Needs to Toughen Up, or Get Trampled Down
Satellite navigation’s vulnerability to jamming and spoofing is not new.
The Defense Department (DOD), in contrast, has toughened military-only M-code signals emitted by the latest GPS III satellites by increasing transmitter power and incorporating stronger encryption. Parkinson also notes the need to update GPS receivers to use all available “integrity-certified” GNSS constellations, meaning that operators of those systems monitor performance of the navigation satellites and transmit timely warnings of false or misleading signals to users. In September 2024, van Diggelen, Boeing’s Tim Murphy and Mitre’s John Betz published a paper illustrating the advantages of giving GPS receivers a head start on the task of synching up with the pseudo-random-noise (PRN) spreading code broadcast by GNSS satellites.
