How 'Factorio' seduced Silicon Valley and me
Tech workers cannot resist the cult video game that asks players to single-handedly restage the industrial revolution
Michal Kovařík, Factorio ’s creator, told me that when players email him to report bugs, they often ask for access to the code so they can attempt to solve the problem themselves. Because Factorio has such a nerdy fan base, many of its obstacles have been tackled with a level of collective brainpower more reminiscent of the Manhattan Project than of video games such as Fortnite or Call of Duty. I will never play Pyanodon, but it gives me great pleasure to know that it exists, much like The Campaign for North Africa, a legendarily intricate tabletop war game that requires you to tabulate every single detail down to the leakage of tank fuel from jerry cans.
