How Apple powered up Battersea Power Station’s redevelopment
The regeneration of the site in south London has been more successful than its critics expected. A historian puts it down to one company’s leap of faith
Up on the ninth floor of 50 Electric Boulevard alongside the brick behemoth of Battersea Power Station, the sound of drilling and hammering resounds overhead. Just across Electric Boulevard is the power station itself, home to shops and expensive apartments but also the British headquarters for Apple, making it one of the most high-profile office buildings in the country. Designed by Foster + Partners, Apple’s office boasts a floor-to-ceiling atrium that shoots up past six floors and is topped by a glass roof, elements that highlight the sheer scale of the power station — albeit one that few will be fortunate enough to see.
