How people actually use ChatGPT vs Claude - and what the differences tell us

While ChatGPT users are asking for help on tasks like writing, Claude users are all about automating and giving directives, data shows.

Practical guidance(which includes tutoring, teaching, and how-tos), seeking information(about people, current events, products, and recipes), and writing(emails, documents, and other communications). OpenAI's researchers grouped user interactions into three buckets: Asking (seeking information or guidance), Doing (producing outputs or completing tasks), and Expressing (sharing opinions or feelings). The report analyzed randomly sampled transcripts and found that directive conversations -- where a user asks Claude to complete a task with minimal interaction -- rose sharply from 27% (in December 2024 to January 2025) to 39% (February to March 2025).
