Huawei's AI servers show tech advancing despite US curbs

Cluster with homegrown Ascend chips seen as competitive with Nvidia on performance

TOKYO -- Huawei Technologies is steadily building up its own artificial intelligence infrastructure with homegrown chips and servers, underscoring China's progress on AI development and deployment even under U.S. export restrictions. The company recently unveiled a new AI server cluster in China's Anhui province. Rather than graphics processing units (GPUs) from Nvidia, which dominates the global market for AI chips, the new cluster uses Ascend chips developed in-house by Huawei.
