Hulu Shows Jarring Anti-Hamas Ad Likely Generated With AI

The ad, which appears to be made using generative AI, shows how the technology can be used not just to mislead, but to more subtly influence.

People dance, eat, and laugh, while a voiceover encourages visitors to “experience a culture rich in tradition.” But it suddenly shifts, turning the face of a smiling man into a grimacing one. The apparently AI-generated reimagining of Gaza looks like a trend on TikTok that uses AI to render alternate histories, says Sam Gregory, executive director of Witness, a nonprofit organization focused on using images and videos for protecting human rights. Israel’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has posted many ads to YouTube, including one in October that showed rainbows and played a lullaby, saying, “Just as you would do everything for your child, we will do everything to protect ours.” It was viewed a million times.
