Hundreds of fake AI-generated pictures of Irish politicians pop up online

Concerns have been raised over the pictures uploaded on an 'online platform and marketplace for generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) content'

Over 120 fake pictures of 45 national, local and European politicians who have either run for office or been elected have been uploaded to an "online platform and marketplace for generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) content" over the last six months, the Irish Mirror has revealed. Fianna Fáil's Malcolm Byrne said as technology becomes more advanced, it can be "more difficult to interpret the difference between reality and a deepfake" as he expressed concerns about the possibility of sophisticated videos being created and shared during voting periods. Separately, Garda sources confirmed to the Irish Mirror that they are investigating the circulation of explicit deepfake photographs of Fianna Fáil candidate and TV host Grainne Seoige during the general election.
