María Hjálmtýsdóttir, activist and teacher, tells us: “The shorter working week has been a great success in Iceland and has changed my family’s life. Pilot projects are underway in Germany, Portugal, Spain and the UK, while Belgium has legislated in favour of the four-day week, but with a system of compensation for hours not worked that is limiting its adoption. By putting the well-being of individuals at the heart of its priorities, Iceland has created a more humane and sustainable working model, which could well inspire other countries to follow its example.
