Indestructible 5D memory crystals to store humanity’s genome for billions of years | These crystals can store up to 360 terabytes of data for billions of years, resisting degradation even in extreme temperatures.
Researchers stored the human genome on a 5D memory crystal, envisioning it as a potential blueprint to revive extinct species in the future.
“The 5D memory crystal opens up possibilities for other researchers to build an everlasting repository of genomic information from which complex organisms like plants and animals might be restored should science in the future allow,” said Peter Kazansky, professor in optoelectronics at the University and the lead on the study. Above the data planes, the crystal displays key elements (hydrogen, oxygen, carbon, nitrogen), DNA bases (adenine, cytosine, guanine, thymine), their molecular structures, and gene placement within chromosomes. “We don’t know if memory crystal technology will ever follow these plaques in distance travelled but each disc can be expected with a high degree of confidence to exceed their survival time,” said Kazansky.
