Intel Is Cutting More Than 15,000 Jobs Despite Getting Billions From the US Government


The chipmaker, which has fallen behind competitors, is slashing 15 percent of its workforce.

Intel is struggling to execute a challenging turnaround plan that involves refocusing on making chips for others through its foundry business and moving more quickly to cutting-edge manufacturing methods. After decades of success thanks to the rise of personal computing, Intel failed to capitalize on the smartphone era, ceding market share to chips based on Arm’s designs. More recently, it has seen Nvidia, a company that started out making graphics chips for gaming, rise to prominence thanks to the importance of its hardware for training AI algorithms.
