iPhones will soon be repairable with genuine used components, but parts pairing persists
Apple plans to expand its self-repair program by allowing consumers and repair shops to use genuine used parts to fix busted iPhones. As ever, though, there are pros and cons to the company's approach.
Apple, a company that talks a big game about sustainability but would love for you to buy a new iPhone every year, is expanding its self-repair program. That said, this could be seen as Apple attempting to exert more control over the repair process by employing pairing and potentially edging out third-party aftermarket parts. A right-to-repair bill that Oregon Governor Tina Kotek signed into law last month bans the practice of parts pairing.
