Is Chrome Even a Sellable Asset?
It’s hard to come up with a buyer who could afford to pay a high price for Chrome and who would pass regulatory muster as its new owner. And if Chrome is not worth a high price, or simply isn’t sellable at one, then why is the DOJ trying to force Google to sell it? They might as well try to force Google to sell the two o’s from its name.
Here’s an article from Bloomberg reporters Leah Nylen and Josh Sisco that asserts in its headline “ Google’s Chrome Worth Up to $20 Billion If Judge Orders Sale ”. It would seem even more punishing to Apple and Mozilla and Samsung et al if the DOJ attempted to prevent Google from making TAC payments to browser makers, period. While Judge Amit Mehta has expressed some skepticism about the DOJ’s proposal to divest Chrome, the government claims the browser is core to Google’s anticompetitive conduct.
