It's the AI Election Year


With over 60 countries holding elections in 2024, deepfakes and robocalls are being used to manipulate voters across the world. WIRED is tracking every instance of AI interference during this critical election year.

They ran an ad on Meta, on Facebook and Instagram, that showed an image of a white woman with injuries to her face that appeared, based on the researcher's findings, to probably be manipulated by generative AI. Vittoria Elliott: First off, I think if we look at what's happening in the Global South, particularly in Indonesia and India, in Bangladesh, in Pakistan with this rampant use of this, where it's really tailored to specific constituencies, the use of avatars and deep fakes, and really localized messaging, I think that's really what we're going to see. What we have witnessed is those who are doing it at scale, 50 or 60 million personalized calls in different politicians' voice, they try to stay behind the scenes and they don't want to reveal their identity because they have external investors who have put in a lot of money.
