Italian lawmakers say Italy used spyware to target phones of immigration activists, but not against journalist

A parliamentary investigation answered some — but not all — the questions related to a spyware scandal involving the use of the Israeli company’s spyware, Graphite.

COPASIR specifically investigated the targeting of Luca Casarini and Giuseppe Caccia, who both work for Mediterranea Saving Humans, an Italian nonprofit with the mission of rescuing immigrants who try to cross the Mediterranean Sea. Cancellato is the director of Fanpage.it, an Italian news website that is known for several investigations including one on the youth-wing of the far-right ruling party in Italy, led by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. COPASIR also investigated the cases of Mattia Ferrari, the chaplain on the rescue ship of Mediterranea Saving Humans; and David Yambio, the president and co-founder of the non-government organization Refugees in Libya, which is active in Italy.
