Japan’s superalloys withstand 1112°F test to protect nuclear fusion reactors
Liquid metal coolants used inside fusion reactors threaten the structural integrity of reactor. A ODS alloy coating is favored to prevent structural damage from within.
However, these coolants, typically made from lithium and lithium-lead (LiPb) alloys, are highly corrosive and threaten the structural integrity of the reactor vessel. “The lithium-aluminum oxide layer’s durability shows that these alloys could last longer in high-temperature, high-stress settings,” said Masatoshi Kondo, an associate professor at Tokyo Science, in a press release. “Our findings show that ODS FeCrAl alloys, with their ability to form durable protective layers, could play a vital role in the future of fusion reactors and other high-temperature power systems,” concluded Kondo in the press release.
