Technically, the duck-rabbit figure is an ambiguous (or reversible, or bistable) figure, not an illusion (Peterson, Kihlstrom, Rose, & Glisky, 1992).
Note added June 30, 2017: Another fabulous New Yorker cartoon, by Paul Noth, also featuring Boring's "wife/mother-in-law" figure, appeared in the July 3, 2017 issue (thanks to Richard Moe for correcting an erroneous date given on a previous version of this page). Note added August 22, 2019: Daniel Quintana, a psychologist at the University of Oslo, found this image of an African white-necked raven on the website of the World Wildlife Sanctuary in Missouri, and posted it to Twitter. On July 27, 2020, the Rachel Maddow Show on MSNBC featured an interview with Rosa Brooks, a legal scholar at Georgetown, about concerns that some have raised that, if Donald Trump loses the election later this year, he might refuse to accept the results and vacate the presidency.
