A tech lobbying group representing Google, Meta, and Snap challenged SB 976 on First Amendment grounds, but their efforts were largely unsuccessful.

As Neowin reports, the Protecting Our Kids from Social Media Addiction Act ( SB 976) was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in September and will take effect on Jan. 1, 2027. However, the law permits both addictive feeds and regular notifications for minor accounts if social media platforms obtain "verifiable parental consent." Two months after the bill was signed into law, tech lobbying group NetChoice, which represents Google, Meta, and Snap, challenged it in a district court in California.
