Knit wit: 1st-ever cat cap that measures brain activity without sedation | In a first, veterinary scientists have successfully scanned the brains of cats in a conscious state.

Typically, monitoring brain activity requires sedating the cats, which could be stressful and uncomfortable for them.

To achieve this, the Université de Montréal team made custom-knitted wool caps filled with electrodes to record brain activity in cats with chronic pain. In an effort to ease the cats’ suffering, the scientists next exposed them to calming stimuli like colored (blue, green, and red) lights and pleasant scents like grapefruit. “This is the first demonstration of EEG feasibility in conscious cats with surface electrodes recording brain activity while exposing them to sensory stimulations,” the researchers wrote in the study.
