Lab-Grown Meat for Pets Was Just Approved in the UK

UK regulators have issued the first approval for a company to use chicken cells grown in the lab as an ingredient in pet food.

In a laboratory in west London, Helder Cruz reaches into a fridge and takes out a small plastic tub. The company is also trying to reduce production costs by replacing some of the expensive proteins in the liquid used to grow cells with small molecules from cheaper sources. That means simplifying the production by starting with off-the-shelf cell lines, and focusing mostly on chicken rather than trying lots of different species.
