Durant’s work involved harnessing thousands of GPUs across 24 data centers in 17 countries—a monumental effort that, as noted in a GIMPS statement, “ends the 28-year reign of ordinary personal computers finding these huge prime numbers.” Durant began contributing to GIMPS in October 2023, recognizing the rapid growth of GPU availability in the cloud as a unique opportunity for the software developed by Mihai. Within a few years, Ernst Mayer developed a program that could run on various non-Intel processors, playing a crucial role in independently verifying nearly every GIMPS prime.
