That seems crazy today, but at the time, that was not one of the quirks people complained about; mostly those DOS versions were unpopular because of incompatibility and issues like wasted space from internal fragmentation. Nobody wanted to type in the date and time on every boot, and a battery-backed real-time clock wasn't a standard feature of any of the 8-bit computers that I'm aware of (certainly not the Atari). On the other hand, the most successful DOS versions for the retro computing Atari community now are precisely the ones that could scale to any drive, namely MyDOS and SpartaDOS.
