License Plate Surveillance Startup Broke The Law While Trying To Reduce Crime

Flock installed its surveillance cameras without permits, and has now been banned from operating in two states.

Installing “devices” on state infrastructure without prior DOT approval is a crime in Florida, Illinois, and South Carolina, and the company has also run into issues with Texas and Washington over its lack of permits. In South Carolina, State Transportation Secretary Christy Hall told Forbes that since spring 2022, her staff has found more than 200 unpermitted Flock cameras during routine monitoring of public roads. If this company is willing to bypass the proper channels to get its cameras installed, all the while not telling anyone who exactly has access to this massive trove of tracking and surveillance data, it can’t possibly be trusted to operate in the public’s best interest.
