During the 2024 U.S. election, stories that seem almost satirical, such as that the government was using weather weapons to target Republican areas, or that immigrants are eating America's pets, were widely circulated and believed. Reporters painstakingly debunk these yarns but newspapers with their stubborn adherence to truth and fact-checking are no match for the Internet wild west, or the politicians (such as Trump) determined to use it to amplify lies and disinformation. Trump had over 90 million followers on Twitter, where he made over 30,000 false or misleading claims, including one that famously summoned his tribe to Washington on Jan 6, 2021.
