Life is more than an engineering problem

Julien Crockett speaks with Ted Chiang about the search for a perfect language, the state of AI, and the future direction of technology.

JULIEN CROCKETT: The idea for this interview came from a conversation I had with computer scientist Melanie Mitchell and psychologist Alison Gopnik, in which they referenced your work when describing the state of artificial intelligence and its possible futures. You’ve written skeptically about how modern AI systems are being implemented, and one metaphor you use to describe large language models (LLMs) is as “a blurry JPEG of the web.” What do you mean?
