Manipulation from Abroad: German Election Campaign Flooded with Fake News and Videos
The German election campaign has become a magnet for fake news and AI-generated propaganda as foreign actors seek to boost the right wing. The attacks are becoming more sophisticated, and are no longer coming just from Russia, but from the U.S. as well.
Years ago, Trump’s former adviser Steve Bannon propagated his favored media strategy for the new age: "Flood the zone with shit.” With lies, exaggerations – anything that might be helpful to get a leg up in the political battle. The authoritarian right wing uses individual examples such as this one to brand content moderation on the whole as "censorship.” The EU’s Digital Services Act (DCA) is a favorite target, legislation which applies strict guidelines to social media platform operators in the European Union. Analyses carried out by the Foreign Ministry showed that the fake story rapidly spread on social media platforms after the pro-Russian disinformation portal zeitgeschenen.de "reported” on the purported affair.
