Middle school removes bathroom mirrors to stop kids from making TikToks

Southern Alamance Middle School in Graham, North Carolina has taken drastic steps to reduce the time kids spend outside of class.

"Unfortunately, it appears that structural and contextual aspects of TikTok are greater contributors to addiction than dispositional attributes of users," according to an article in the Brown University Journal of Public Health. "Elements of app design and functionality, namely the variable reward pattern of the content stream, the simple, 'flow-inducing' interface, and the capability for 'endless scroll,' capitalize on classical conditioning and reward-based learning processes to facilitate the formation of habit loops and encourage addictive use." Last week, TikTok banned a Yemeni teenager after he was dubbed a "hot Houthi pirate" for a video that featured him standing atop a seized cargo ship on the Red Sea.
