MIT engineers craft spring device to enhance robotic muscles | This new flexure functions as a skeleton-like module to boost muscle performance in robots.

Known as a flexure, it could help build artificial skeletons for future small robots — including surgical robots.

Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) engineers designed a spring-like device called a flexure to maximize the performance of natural muscle tissues. Engineers devised this new device for more efficient and adaptable biohybrid robots by harnessing the power of natural muscles. According to MIT, human “muscles are nature’s perfect actuators — devices that turn energy into motion.”
