MIT, Harvard, Columbia scientists create implantable microphones for the deaf
Researchers create implantable mic for fully internal cochlear implants, overcoming key barriers to seamless hearing device integration.
As cochlear implant microphones are often positioned on the side of the head, users cannot benefit from the outer ear’s natural sound localization cues and noise filtering capabilities. However, the majority of newly developed devices that detect sound through the skin or the movement of the middle ear bones have trouble recording delicate noises and broad frequency ranges. The study details, led by researchers from MIT, Massachusetts Eye and Ear, Harvard Medical School, and Columbia University, were published in the Journal of Micromechanics and Microengineering.
