More than 700 species that are new to science have been documented in the Congo Basin over the past decade, including the electric blue damselfly Umma gumma, the crocodile Mecistops leptorhynchus and the nocturnal frog Congolius robustus. “I spent my early career carrying out wildlife surveys in many parts of the Congo Basin and was always astonished by its biodiversity,” said biologist Allard Blom, WWF vice-president for African forests. A huge Roman bathhouse — complete with hot and cold rooms, well-preserved frescoes and a plunge pool big enough for 30 people — has been uncovered during a major excavation in Pompeii, Italy.
