Modern CI is too complex and misdirected (2021)

April 07, 2021 at 09:00 AM | categories: CI, build system The state of CI platforms is much stronger than it was just a few years ago. Overall, this is a good thing: access to powerful CI platforms enables software developers and companies to ship more reliable software more frequently, which benefits its users/customers.

At a very high level, both are providing a pool of servers offering general compute/execute functionality with specialized features in the domain of building/shipping software, like inter-task artifact exchange, caching, dependencies, and a frontend language to define how everything works. Taskcluster's security model makes GitHub Actions, GitLab Pipelines, and other commonly used CI services look like data exfiltration and software supply chain vulnerability factories by comparison. (For some companies multiple millions of dollars could be saved annually by eliminating redundant human capital maintaining similar systems, reducing machine idle/run costs, and improving turnaround times of critical development loops.)
