Moonshot AI’s Kimi K2 outperforms GPT-4 in key benchmarks — and it’s free

Chinese AI startup Moonshot releases open-source Kimi K2 model that outperforms OpenAI and Anthropic on coding tasks with breakthrough agentic capabilities and competitive pricing.

Moonshot AI, the Chinese artificial intelligence startup behind the popular Kimi chatbot, released an open-source language model on Friday that directly challenges proprietary systems from OpenAI and Anthropic with particularly strong performance on coding and autonomous agent tasks. Moonshot’s solution directly addresses exploding attention logits by rescaling weight matrices in query and key projections, essentially solving the problem at its source rather than applying band-aids downstream. Unlike previous “GPT killers” that excelled in narrow domains while failing on practical applications, Kimi K2 demonstrates broad competence across the full spectrum of tasks that define general intelligence.
