More breast cancer cases found when AI used in screenings, study finds

First real-world test finds approach has higher detection rate without having a higher rate of false positives

Prof Alexander Katalinic, a co-author of the study from the University of Lübeck in Germany, said: “We could improve the detection rate without increasing the harm for the women taking part in breast cancer screening,” adding the approach could also reduce the workload of radiologists. Stephen Duffy, emeritus professor of cancer screening at Queen Mary University of London, who was not involved in the work, said the results were credible and impressive. Dr Kristina Lång, of Lund University, said the study added to the growing body of evidence supporting the potential benefits of incorporating AI into mammography screening.
