More pro for the DEC Professional 380 (featuring PRO/VENIX)
In computing the DEC PDP-11 is something of a geologic feature. Plus, as most systems in the family were minicomputers, they had the whole m...
Strictly business-targetted and profitable almost entirely because of their margins, they did make enough money to justify a follow-on, the 1980 VT278, a/k/a the original DECmate — a stripped-down version packed into a VT100 shell with a faster 5MHz Intersil/Harris 6120 CPU and 32kW of RAM, though the reduced hardware made it slower to update the screen. The real-time module option, such as those used with the VAX Consoles but also sold separately for general data acquisition, exposed ports here such as IEEE-488; the IVIS machines had an entire interface device connected here dubbed the "backpack" which broke out multiple connectors to and from attached playback hardware. That said, the capacitors ended up more of a hindrance than a help during initial configuration (admittedly Dave warns against this too) and I recommend pulling their jumper unless you want to test them out or until you're ready to leave the emulator installed; it isn't safe to go messing with the BeagleBone when the caps are hot and it's obviously harder to powercycle.
