Morocco moves to digitise its currency
Morocco is moving towards an ambitious scheme to dematerialise its economy with the introduction of the e-dirham. to ease transaction and improve monetary security.
This initiative is part of an ambitious project to modernise financial transactions and reduce reliance on cash, which is one of the highest in the world at 30 percent of GDP. This distinction is important because it means that the e-dirham will be under the control of the Central Bank of Morocco, limiting the risks of speculation and ensuring relative stability, as this new currency will be directly linked to the Moroccan dirham. However, in order for this new currency to be truly accepted by citizens, it will be important to conduct an effective communication campaign and make substantial efforts in financial education.
