My history with Forth and stack machines (2010)
VLSI tools take a chip from conception through testing. Perhaps 500 lines of source code.
The requirement for "real world work" is almost by definition incompatible with "the freedom to change the language, the compiler, the OS and the hardware design". Presumably that was partly the result of not reading " Stack Computers: the new wave", and not studying the chip designs of Forth's creator Chuck Moore, either. Chuck Moore constantly tweaks the language and largely dismisses the ANS standard as rooted in the past and bloated.
